What’s the other side pad look like? If the slider pins are stuck or not properly lubricated, one side brake pad will wear out way faster than the other.

Edit: Also the rotor doesn’t look happy. IMHO, it’s due for a full proper service.

I am not a mechanic, but I do change my own brakes. And I agree that rotor looks line it could use a turning.

Rotors are cheap enough that turning is hardly a thing these days. It might be worth it, but it’s an extra hassle imo.

I have not had to replace rotors in well over a decade, the last time I did they were $90 each. Getting them turned usually cost me $40-60 for all four (depending if the person rang me up vs give them a tip)

Same amount of pad remaining on the other side of the rotor. The pads on the other side of the car are in the same condition. The rotor is a little sad and rusty, but that’s because I don’t drive this car very much these days. It’s difficult to get a good look at the rear pads, but I can feel with my fingers that they still have some meat left on them and are also wearing symmetrically. I don’t understand why this mechanic would tell me I need brakes when it’s not difficult for me to check for myself. Brake fluid level is good and car doesn’t have trouble stopping.

Oof. Yeah, it’s entirely possible that particular mechanic is trying to sell you snake oil then. Going by your description, it sounds like everything is okay. But if you have any doubts, seek a second opinion from another mechanic.
