onlinepersona@programming.devto Opensource@programming.dev•A community-led fork of Organic Maps13·9 days agoAnd it’s on codeberg not github! That’s great 👏 One more project out of the proprietary Microsoft ecosystem.
onlinepersona@programming.devto Technology@lemmy.zip•One US politician wants to add trackers to Nvidia's GPUs so they can be bricked if they go to ChinaEnglish5·12 days agoI bet this will be out into a military plane and it’ll brick while flying over China or close to it. The genius of these people cannot be understated. Imagine, if they’re saying this publicly, I bet you they have this in existing military equipment they are selling to partners. Anybody buying military equipment from the US is asking for trouble.

How can we take Mozilla seriously when it’s being led by such a person. It’s like VW praying the Nazis to win so that they don’t lose funding.
If it’s on peertube, I might follow it. On YouTube, even if I watched it, it’d be through yt-dlp and thus no views for you (at least not officially).
We should all aspire to be like that legend.
onlinepersona@programming.devto Linux@lemmy.ml•I swapped the entire school computers to linux mintEnglish0·19 days agoHow does one get a job like this? This is great! I want to get a job in a school or university and infect it with linux. “Guys, look! It’s cheaper and we can set it up then pay for support which still makes it cheaper and students can learn how to use it on their computers too, since it’s freely available to them!”
onlinepersona@programming.devto JetBrains@programming.dev•JetBrains defends removal of negative reviews for unpopular AI Assistant31·20 days agoJetbrains seems to want to lose customers. But besides VSCode, which other proper IDEs exist. Eclipse is a joke, Netbeans is basically dead, VSCodium and other forks are Electron beasts,… There are a bunch of editors out there cosplaying as IDEs, but let’s be honest, they are nowhere near as good as proper IDEs, nor as easy to use.
nvim users spend decades and have terrabytes of plugins, helix has no plugin system, emacs is hand cancer, and Kate is a great editor, but no IDE. It feels like the Chrome and Firefox situation, unfortunately.
I know someone will say Zed, but isn’t that Mac first? Linux users probably come last, so also not a great option.
onlinepersona@programming.devto Technology@lemmy.zip•Google and Adobe appear to be abusing copyright to silence a whistleblower's videoEnglish7·23 days agoOn one side, fuck google, on the other, the video is “whistleblowing” DEI practices. Not sure what there is to “whistlenlow” about. I thought quotas were mandated for a long time through affirmative action. How is that news?
Understandable. It’s a pity Google is so embedded in our systems. You can still get a fairphone though. It also comes with regular android. I’ve read in multiple places not to get the official fairphone case. You might have to check why that is.
The good thing about the fairphone is that it has the highest reparability raring of any current phone out there. You can swap put the screen, battery, and other components very easily when things go haywire.
And of course it’s one of the very few companies on this world that tries to give a shit about slavery in the supply chain.
I know somebody’s going to day “get a pixel and put grapheneOS, it’s the most secure phone in the planet”. I don’t know if the Swedish apps dependent on google services will work, but if you do decide to go google hardware, you can try and get it secondhand.
Fairphone with eOS if you want to get away from Google even more. No google services but access to f-droid and the play store with anonymous accounts.
Or, get a second-hand phone and flash it with eOS or lineage OS.
Thanks for the response. So there’s a bunch of stuff to do myself but also surprisingly enough stuff for an editor.
I’ll take a deeper look at it.
After reading this, I’m kinda curious how it compares to JetBrains. It’s becoming more and more VSCode like and I’m not a fan.
Does Kate support or have plugins for renaming symbols, presenting documentation, formatting files, showing code diagnostics beyond syntax errors (for example code smells or so), have AI integration (explain this, rewrite this, replace this with prompt output, …), specific framework integrations (reactjs, django, actix, …), and stuff like expanding macros in C/C++ and Rust?

However, I’ve been waiting for the memristor for about a decade now and haven’t heard nor read much about progress in that field.
We really need a license that works out compensation for opensource projects used by companies or anyone generating revenue from it. This stuff will keep on happening at the same scale it does otherwise.
https://postopen.org/ might be one of those licences and they need funding.

Pity the is such a non-issue to people. But it’s probably because they haven’t been made aware of it nor had it shoved in their face for years. Ads and marketing do work, but FSF probably doesn’t have money to do so…
onlinepersona@programming.devto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Quick everyone, prevent a warning text or something125·30 days agoAgreed. I wish moderators would ban those people from linux communities and more users would report their elitist behaviour. It’s really annoying to ask a question and get belittled for having the audacity of being ignorant.
I understand these people lack power elsewhere in their lives and want to be powerful where they believe themselves to be experts, but it’s a real pity they express it with a complete lack of empathy. If you don’t want to help, don’t say anything. Let somebody who does want to help nicely do the helping.
I see! Things changed rapidly. Thanks for clearing it up.
