Trivia. 1987 loonies are from the first year of circulation. They weren’t even called loonies really yet (that sort of evolved that year). Now, the term “loonie” is synonymous with Canadian Dollar.
So, while not exactly rare, this is from the first year of circulation of the modern Canadian one dollar coin.
Lol imagine playing a role in getting the new coin designed and minted, feeling all proud of it, and then everyone starts calling it a “loonie”.
