Does pixelfed have dark mode on android? I open my app and go to appearance and I don’t see any options for that. All my other apps are in dark mode. The web version dark mode works. I want to use pixelfed but the white that the app uses could not possibly be worse for my eyes. Trying to use the app for just a few minutes gave me a headache.

Not that I use it often, But Pixelix on F-Droid has dark mode, and I do prefer it’s appearance compared to the official Pixelfed app or PixelDroid, that is just personal preference though

Seconding Pixelix, but I had to get version 3.2 from github for it to work. (It looks like 3.2 is on izzyondroid now but not yet f-droid).

Besides the lack of dark mode, the official app is too Instagram copy for me.

For what it’s worth, being a IG copy isn’t a bad thing. If they’re trying to get the IG crowd over, best to give the users something familiar to keep them using pixelfed. Having other apps is a nice feature for those like us who want it

Yeah, I’m trying pixelix right now. I also prefer it, but I can’t help but feel like the official app would be better if it could just swap all the white for black.

Yeah, the official app lacks dark mode. The official web version looks better and works better. I prefer to use the phanpy.social frontend which is even nicer. If you really prefer an Android app, PixelDroid is pretty good and definitely better than the official app.

Thanks for the reply. I can’t find anything recent on pixelfeds channels talking about this. Using bright white backgrounds in an app in 2024-5 is just weird to me. Is there some technical reason? Some philosophical reason? As it stands the official app is completely unusable for me, and I think this is a prime example of how the fediverse could be more user friendly.

Other apps have dark mode, so it’s not a technical reason. The web interface has it, so it’s not a philosophical reason. I think the app is just incomplete. It’s too bad because people seeking an alternative to Instagram will just try the official app, dislike it, and move on. The network itself is a great with any other interface.
