First of all,welcome to Lemmy!
Here are a few pointers to help you settle in
Feel free if you have any questions!
99.9% of the time I’m just lurking on Reddit, but here I‘m actually getting interested in commenting again. Feels „safer“ than the other place.
Welcome ! Come on !superbowl@lemmy.world you’ll find that the animator is very friendly and open to chat back.
It’s true. I’ll talk owl stuff all day! I’ve been trying extra hard this year to include plenty of non-US centric things too, even before my country went totally off the rails.
Welcome!
Loving it so far! I’ve also found great replacements for all the US software I’ve been using. Should have done that a long time ago, there are actually amazing non fascist alternatives!
Welcome!
Why is this buyeuropean on feddit.uk but it has an EU flag? I feel like somebody has yet to learn about a major political event that happened in the last few years.
lol. Poor brexiter
There’s !BuyFromEU@lemm.ee on an Estonian server without a flag, but it’s mostly memes

This is my third or fourth alt on Lemmy since joining. I love that I can stick to one account or change instances if I feel like it. It’s not too difficult to get used to! I’m getting a desktop app next.
I like that there’s an application process for each instance. That gives you a good idea of how the instance is managed and what to expect.
I love that I can get German news and interact with Germans and German language speakers. Or, in other words, I love that it’s not default centralized American.
It’s really cool seeing their instances next to everyone’s handle. There’s so much here! I feel a lot safer. I love that everyone is human.
I see @Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com everywhere. I have been here a day and I think I have upvoted them 15 times already. Haha
Well, welcome, that’s a very nice comment!
You seems to like every right thing! Welcome abord!
Glad to be here!
Welcome!
This is my first comment, just joined during the weekend. It took about half a day to get used to the lower amount of stuff and the slower pace here. And I really like it! The quality of discourse here seems so much higher and with the lower amount of posts I find that I can take my time and not get overwhelmed. Should have joined years ago :-)
Welcome to non-corporate reddit 🎉
Welcome, glad to hear you like it!
Years ago, it was just a safe haven for half a dozen communists.
2 years ago it was already pretty well spread out IMO, that was just before the API fiasco. Now add some years before that and I’d say yeah, a much smaller community.
But even a couple years ago Lemmy was beginning to thrive.
I was looking for reddit alternatives before and didn’t pull through. Now that I did (first hour), I dont see why anyone wouldn’t “migrate”.
Ah, and I’m using “eternity”. Reminds me of the old days before reddit turned facebook.
Welcome!
I’m as confused as the next guy, but I’m hanging in there! I’m not sure if the decentralized nature means I’m missing communities because I’m looking in the wrong place, or if there’s just fewer stuff around.
I feel the same, but it helps to not just browse “subscribed” but to also check out “local” and especially “all”
You can also take a few minutes and check out the “communities” overview and join those you recognise by name or browse a few of them to decide if you want to join them.
It does not matter on which instance most of the time. Also, I am subscribed to similar communities on different instances, cause why not. Worst case scenario: I get duplicate news.
Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but I think that you will see more stuff in All if more people from your instance are subscribed to more communities from other instances.
Go up to Communities
Change Local to All
Search there.
if you’re on an even slightly busy instance, you’ll probably see most of what exists.
if someone is on a smaller instance, they can go to https://lemmy.world/communities, select ALL and see what exists
For the most part, just going to all on any server with a couple hundred users should be enough to see most of the communities.
lemm.ee has most of the communities federated.
Do you mean instances can federate with communities and not just other instances?
When you follow a remote community, it doesn’t send all of that servers posts. Only posts from that comm. That way, if I’m hosting a small server and subscribe to !guineapigs@lemmy.world, for example, it won’t drown my server with the rest of lemmy.worlds posts.
Does that mean what I see in All is a combination of instances my instances is federated with + the comms that users from my instance are subscribed to? So if my instance is federated with another instance and no one from my instance is subbed to any of the comms from that other instance then no one from my instance will see posts from that instance in All?
Sorry for word salad.
All is all the communties on your instance, and remote instances people on your instance subscribe to.
Thanks for confirming this.
https://lemmy-federate.com/ also helps to mitigate that issue
Yet it is the case. But if you are in a smaller english speaking instance, you should have most big general community federated to your instance.
It’s kind of empty and I thought about stopping my boycott of Reddit because I think it hurts the US more to use Reddit as a place to talk because unfortunately that’s where everybody is. Still couldn’t get myself to do it though, but I’m struggling to find content here on Lemmy and I suspect maybe I don’t know how to use it
Same here but I also feel like the emptiness helps with my screentime. Easier to check new topics and the continue with life :D i get very stuck on reddit with endless doomscrolling.
I think a big thing is that the front page is not completely changing in order to grab people’s attention every few minutes. Once you’ve seen what is trending you’re set for a little while, and if you don’t want to explore other communities and stuff you can go on to do something else with your day.
That said, the default sorting of front page posts on Lemmy (active?) has received some criticism - you should check out the other options for sorting content if you want it to look more fresh. :)
same! I’m also free from Facebook scrolling (which turned into BlueSky scrolling and then vanished)
Did you have a look at this post? https://lemmy.world/post/26409821
Looking for some good software recommendations, I like what I’m seeing here.
Switched to LibreOffice, and Betterbird for Mail. Works well so far. Using Vivaldi as a browser, that’s a European project but with a modified Chrome core as far as I understand, the built-in AdBlocker works fine in combination with NoScript, even on mobile. Trying out Linux Mint so I can switch the OS when Windows 10 loses support later this year.
what Software do you want?
Great experience, Voyager is a great app and Lemmy feels kinda like Reddit in the good old days. Still have to check Reddit threads every now and then through search results while looking for info, though. Hopefully we can get more content going, but I guess that’s up to us users :)
Welcome!
I’m surprised how quickly I’ve gotten used to it! I honestly really like the mobile app and it’s gestures, as well as the customizability.
Although I don’t think I’ll be completely quitting reddit just yet, as some of my more niche interests don’t have communities here yet.
Have you considered creating new communities for your niche interests? You might just find like-minded people here. :)
I would but I simply don’t have the time or motivation to moderate and manage a community
Well here’s the thing, if no one shows up then there’s nothing to moderate, and if people show up you can make one or several of moderators. ;) But you’ll never find out unless you create a community.
That’s fair, most of people still use Reddit for niche interests
I got Boost for
RedditLemmy back. The world is beautiful again! Now to find communities that I like… I’m a bit lost but I’ll settle soon enough.
Boost for Lemmy hasn’t been updated in a year or so, you might want to try voyager app if things are not working correctly.
Aaaah… Too bad, I was so happy to get Boost back haha. I’ll give Voyager a shot
Thanks for the heads up
Welcome! !communitypromo@lemmy.ca can help to find communities
Not only Lemmy i also joined Mastodon lol. I find this expirience to be refreshing, maybe thats because this platform has less users or maybe because its not under someones control but i feel as if i moved from big, overpopulated city to a countryside. Its like breathing fresh air, i feel myself free, and i love reading comments here, they look like real conversations between humans. Although im not from European Union but im your neighbor from Ukraine and i totally support this movement or its better to call an idea, i dunno. I replaced a lot of stuff already but thats only the first step. Also im really glad to be here.
Welcome!
Came over from Reddit as part of plan to divest from US-based products. Happy to be here, and plan to explore. Mainly lurked over on Reddit - hope to contribute more actively over here!
I almost never posted on Reddit. Partly because someone has usually already said something close to what I wanted to say. With the smaller community here I feel like I can make a unique contribution more often.
Yes, I know what you mean and would encourage you to share your perspective more - it will still be unique, even if it is similar to others.
Welcome!
Thank you :)
