The only advantage I see is that it actually seems to keep a better handle on the status of the process/service. The old-style unit scripts would often get out of sync and not realize that a process had died, or if they did they would repeatedly respawn a service that would just die again. Maybe that was less of a problem in later years than I experienced earlier, but it was there.

The whole init.d system felt very ad-hoc with every script working a little bit differently, giving different output styles, etc.

I don’t understand what you mean by “cutting too deep”. It’s supposed to cut all the way through, that’s the whole point.

That’s not “just to be able to play a game”. Mods are always whole ‘nother thing, that’s not exclusive to Linux.

I’d have to check. I know Cyberpunk was supported very early on Linux but haven’t looked into modding it.

I found it useful as a little kind of mnemonic to call out the distinctive features of each language.

The one major thing it misses is that Japanese uses some of the Chinese characters, so you have to check for the “stabby/loopy” characters mixed in to tell; and sometimes there aren’t any if the text is short.

It is interesting as the metaphor becomes reality though. Modern folks (and I mean anything post-gen-X) mostly don’t understand folders and especially filing cabinets, and that metaphor breaks badly with deep nesting, and symlinks/shortcuts and multiple different vies of the same content (e.g. google drive web vs desktop)…

It also leads to odd anachronisms like the floppy disk as save icon.

The thing is the metaphor was never perfect and it takes a long time to get enough people used to it, plus you have to be pretty consistent or people don’t realize the metaphor exists at all.

It’s convenient and not confusing at all but apple people will insist cutting a file doesn’t make sense.

As a non-Apple person: they are correct, but sometimes a metaphor fails and there is no better alternative.
