  • I startled Paul F Tompkins at an improv show by bumping into him as we both rounded a corner. We spoke really briefly but he was funny, courteous and we both apologized for startling the other and I laughed at his good joke about it and he politely pretended to laugh at mine.

I saw a Sedin twin (no idea which one) and we gave the guy nod to each other as I biked past. Oh, and last year I saw Rick Tocchet during the playoff run (but he was on the phone and I didn’t want to bug the guy.)

The best one was Kyle Wellwood, who was a mediocre but adorable player. But I saw him at a DJ set where he was with some famous ufc guy and together they were with a half dozen women, none of whom were interested in Wellwood who sat around looking jealous and vaguely annoyed.

For this election, electoral reform isn’t making it into the top 5 or 10 in any poll I’ve seen, feel free to share something contrary! (It’s sort of like climate, many people are in favour of climate legislation but it’s not top of mind for this election.)

We’ve already gone over the merits of PR and I’ve politely shown you why PR doesn’t seem to be a great choice. (For anyone interested, I’ve given this person a boatload of time to hear these same tired points over and over again. https://lemmy.ca/post/40556342/15124577)

tl;dr: Despite cries of cherrypicking (which seems absurd given that our G7 peers are probably the best comparisons, though you could also look at Austria, Netherlands, Poland etc to see PR going so poorly that people are giving up and turning the extreme right. Basically, it comes down to what you think Democracy is for? If it’s to produce good governments that benefit their people, I think our system seems to be doing a better job than PR has recently (Personally, I think polarization, less informed populaces and the emergence of a bunch of serious problems in rapid succession have made a system based on coalitions much more difficult) whereas this person seems to believe the only thing that matters is getting the most accurate reflection of how people vote (though, oddly, hates some forms of PR like Israel’s even if they are more representative of how people vote. I guess it’s vote representation is all that matters until the examples don’t look good.)

Edit: OP also seems to have responded then locked the thread to prevent a response. For anyone who manages to get through the pages of silliness.

  • It’s been great thanks! Putting the (hopefully) finishing touches on a massive chunk of code for a work project. Also switched to Deezer (part of dropping all my American stuff) and found they have all the weird little folk punk my last few streaming services didn’t have.

May go swim some laps with a buddy tonight which is always a good preface to make the night’s beers feel earned. And then taking it easy cleaning and cooking tomorrow as my rec league soccer team finds ourselves in the Finals and Lord knows we’ve wanted these champion shirts for awhile. Strongest team I’ve ever played with, but it’s terrifying as I’m a decade older than most and not as good with the footwork but I’m still fast and play a mean/hard centre D role which is nerve wracking but fun as hell.

  • Is this fascism? Especially with the benefit of hindsight it feels at least a little like the beginnings of it.

But I think this is exactly the issue.

Folks calling Bush a fascist 20 years ago weren’t saying “this is a little like the beginnings” which would be a reasonable statement (not sure how far I agree but I don’t think it’s lunacy.)

And I think that lack of distinction really hurt us and robbed the word of its meaning, which has cost us now.

  • I think it’s more that people have been using the word fascist as a perjorative for a while so it’s kind of lost all meaning. Like, folks were calling George W a fascist which seems to stretch the definition so far so as to be meaningless.

And then we did again in 2016 which seemed kind of more accurate but also a little silly to the point that when actual scary fascist shit happened at the end, people had tuned the word out.

Now, it just feels impotent, which is a very bad thing.

It’s sort of like how people kept claiming Israel is run by nazis etc, I get the appeal of the term and dislike what’s happening but goddamnit, just makes us look silly in the court of public opinion.
