That’s how I started last (2024) year, rereading all that good Tolkien’s stuff, Bilbo, lotr, the silmarillion,… It’s really the kind of masterpiece, you can always “discover” new details and links every single time you read it…

I just finished The Housemaid, by Freida McFadden and found it to be a gripping page-turner, very quick to read, and thoroughly enjoyable. I agree with you on all points about the science in Hail Mary. However, what bothered me more was the strict, predictable alternation between past and present. This rigid structure detracted from my overall enjoyment of the novel, making the narrative feel somewhat monotonous and, at times, overly predictable.

On the other hand, The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy by Cixin Liu was a real favorite for me.

Just finished Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir. Nice sci-fi, well wrote, page turner, for sure not the best in its genre but it’s quite a nice novel to spend a bit of time.

Next read will be The housemaid, by Freida McFadden and, if I enjoy, I’ll read the two others of the serie.

I think a bit the opposite: I’m really worried about the trend to give people only information they care about. I think it’s essential to be able to have information about everything. Of course there will always be stuff you don’t care about but having it automatically filtered out is dangerous in my opinion. In GAFA-powered social networks, you are only given pieces of information about your own opinion, you never have something that make you question yourself about your opinion. The power of independent and open media like Lemmy is to not rely on such biasing algorithms.

As of now, I backup stuff (mainly pictures) from my phone to a linux file server using rsync in termux (launched through the tasker plugin and automate). I search a replacement to get rid of the automate application that I need only for that, is not Foss and require to run in background in order to use it. Do you think Syncthing can deserve my use case ? Of course I can RTFM but…

I purchase mostly digital books because I use to read at night next to my sleeping partner and e-reader is the easiest way for me. Also O don’t have a very big house to store all. Now from a piracy vs purchase point of view: I actually buy ebooks as a mark of support to authors I like very much. Now I must confess that for some very popular authors, I trend to think that one book pirated or one book bought won’t change a lot for them. So I buy mostly less known or indie authors at the end.

Well I seen, I even code reviewed without knowing, when I asked colleague what happened to him, he said “I used chatgpt, I’m not sure to understand what this does exactly but it works”. Must confess that after code review comments, not much was left of the original stuff.

I see a general trends not being too worried because of how the technology works.

The worrysome part being what capitalism and management can think but that’s just an update of the old joke “A product manager is a guy that think 9 women can make a baby in 1 month”. And anyway, if not that there will be something else, it’s how our society is.

Now, I feel better, and I understand that my first point of view of fear about this technology and rejection of it is perhaps a very bad idea. I really need to start using it a bit in order to known this technology. I already found some useful use cases that can help me (get inspiration while naming things, generate some repetitive unit test cases, using it to help figuring out about well-known API, …).
