Racist, apartheid profiteer, open supporter of racist far right parties across the world, frequent promoter & amplifier of far right wing and openly racist & anti-Semitic voices on his social media platform? Put up a test post, my account is from Lemmy.ca and it worked so it looks like it’s fixed. It did require restarting my client (using Voyager on iOS) so try that if you’re still getting the lock issue.
My vote is for what I put in the original thread that was ignored multiple times.
Unlock the community, leave it as is, the problems you are mentioning as major factors in the decision simply do not matter that much to the community.
If the mod team chooses to leave and moderate somewhere else because they are sick of people assuming moderation actions done by instance admins are because of them, then they can step aside and mod a 196 community wherever they wish.
However it will be hard or impossible to undo the damage that has been done, with this comment from moss in particular being especially awful. A sentiment like that can’t just be walked back, it speaks to a moderator having little or no respect for the community and not understanding their place in it. The mods contributions are respected & appreciated, but the community is not being respected in turn.
I genuinely can’t believe moss said that, it was actually shocking to me. You had to assume it during the beginning of that thread, and people tried to give the mods the benefit of the doubt, but to just go full mask off and say “no the community is the mod team and we can do what we want with it” was just bonkers.
I love this community because I see stuff that I never would see otherwise and would never assume would make me laugh, and find my self bursting out giggling.
This is one of those times.
Setting aside what an awful & insulting response this (the community is the community, that’s why the word exists. Moderators are not the community)…
If you really believe this, then why lock the existing one? Obviously your well planned & executed move will be wildly successful, so there should be no need to lock the existing one. Unless of course 8 people who do caretaker duties on the community are in fact NOT the community, the people are and you need them, even if you don’t respect their opinions or contributions.
Why are you not engaging with the large number of users suggesting simply leaving this community unlocked and allowing new mods to take over? It’s very obvious you are avoiding responding to those comments. As you have acknowledged, this was handled badly with zero community choice or involvement. Few, if any commenters agree with the move or support it.
Nobody is asking for a “360” on whatever the mod team planned, the community can’t hold you hostage and force you to moderate a community when you don’t want to. Locking the community however should not be your choice to make. If you want to leave, leave. If the mod team and new instance are so important as you suggest, you’ll have a flourishing community on lemmy.world in no time.
But locking out the community with no consultation or notice is just cruel.
It’s pretty clear what the community consensus here is.
You can leave, and start a new 196 community wherever you like. Leave this one as is, and people can choose to follow one, both or neither.
Locking it here is very hostile to the community and a categorically bad move. I hope the instance admins can step in, remove the mods and unlock the community.

Yep. I’m in MAU numbers because I logged in twice this month to run Sky Follower Bridge. After the API debacle my average usage went from hours a day to zero minutes per day.
Even with the most favourable, most meaningless statistic he can pull he still can’t show growth or even staying in place.
Which is what Trump wants, as he also publicly admits he just doesn’t pay bills if he doesn’t feel like it.
Looking forward to all the lawsuits between the two should he lose.
How is giving a sober and straightforward explanation of why he can’t use Firefox “bitching”? The simple fact is “switch to Firefox” isn’t a solution for everyone in every case. Burying your head in the sand about that benefits nobody.

I can only assume they see it as a double edged sword. Rights-holders (read: publishers, labels & studios) would have the power to sue here, not creators (read: artists, musicians and filmmakers).
These rights-holders also want to use AI so they don’t have to pay or deal with creators, so while they don’t love that other companies are making money off their content, they’re more just mad that someone else did it first before they could exploit their own content in the same way.
Sue and set precedent, and they might accidentally make it impossible for them to turn around and do the exact same thing once they have the technical know-how.
Entirely speculation, but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me.
EDIT - As another commenter mentioned, I broke my own rule and commented without reading and this was discovery as part of an ongoing lawsuit. I did say it was entirely speculation though, and I still think this is why you don’t see so many AI related lawsuits in all the areas there is just tons of content generation. I also still think this is a “mad they couldn’t get there first” situation.
Sonos. Recent app troubles aside (it’s really not that bad, just kind of clunky for certain tasks), the longevity alone make them so worth it. Despite being essentially computers/smart home devices, they support 10+ year old devices in their latest app, older devices in their S1 Controller app, and the sound quality & setup ease is amazing.
Plus, they have pretty good Black Friday sales and make it easy to build piece by piece if pricing is too high. You can also used replaced pieces to build a sound system in another room.
Over ~3 years I started with a Beam, then bought a Sub and two Play:1s as rears. Bought an Arc, moved the Beam to the bedroom. Just recently I bought 2 Arc 300s as rears/upward firing Atmos speakers, and moved the Play:1s to the bedroom. Resale value stays high so if you have no use for a piece, you can sell it and get 50%-75% of what you paid out of it easily.
There are cheaper devices with better sound quality out there, but nobody else can compete on the whole package with Sonos.
You don’t have to theorize this, you can play Minecraft in VR and experience it.
It’s fucking terrifying. A creeper blew me up and I almost had a heart attack.
Features: Tablet layout on iPad, GIF scrobbling with swipe.
Bugs: Database error, UI missing requiring quit and restart.
Overall though, Voyager is amazing & indispensable. Great job :)
