Howrar’s being nice about it but here’s the way I see it (sightly less nice):

• What someone wants to call their partner/significant other/husband/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever is up to them and nobody else. Whether or not it’s clear is irrelevant. They should share exactly as much or as little information about their lives as they want and use whatever word they wanna use because, simply put, we’re randos on the internet and it’s none of our business.
• Whether or not these people get married, are married, or even want to get married is a private matter and who they share and/or discuss this with is up to them and nobody else. Furthermore, we are not allowed to have opinions on how their relationship or marriage works. Whether they want to get married after a week, or they wanna casually hang out for 5/10/50/whatever years without getting married, it’s their life and as randos on the internet, we don’t get and honestly shouldn’t even want a say in it. Live and let live, mate :)

Your views on relationships and marriage seem very traditional to me, and that’s fine. Asking why people use words like “partner” or “significant other” instead of wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend is also fine. But just a heads up, you come off kinda shitty when you say “a joke relationship” and “proves at least one of the people is only wanting a good time” in response to something that’s a little different from what you think a relationship should be.

Yeah, a big reason why Remedy took Epic’s money was that barely anyone wants to invest in an honest to god sell it once traditional single player game these days. Almost every investor with enough money to finance something like AW2 wanted mtx bullshit and/or live service and epic was one of maybe a handful that had both the ability and willingness to fund the damn thing so credit where credit is due.

For that reason, I don’t mind buying it on Epic. The always online requirement though, that’s a deal breaker.

The good news is that the live service bubble burst so hard and spectacularly that we may see a return to actual good games getting funding after investors are done licking their wounds.

As much as I hate Epic, I actually bought AW2 based on that logic but ended up refunding it because, and I can not stress this enough, FUCK ALWAYS ONLINE REQUIREMENTS ON PURELY OFFLINE GAMES. I refuse to pay for an offline game that locks me out when my internet isn’t working…doubly so when the pirated version works perfectly fine without internet.

P.S. I also refuse to pay for single player games with arbitrary online “features” made to force a DRM check, or games published by cunts that do layoffs and shutter studios while posting record profits but that’s a different conversation.

This! It’s kinda turning (parts of) tech YT into the drama filled cesspool that is the rest of YT. Shit that could and should be a private conversation seems like it’s getting blown up for attention and clicks. Frankly if I wanted that type of content, I’d be watching the channels that do it better and at a much larger scale.

I really don’t wanna defend Linus here buuuut…

I can see someone who’s switching over from Windows making the same mistake, especially if they’re good with Windows but new to Linux. You get so conditioned constantly telling Windows to take off the fucking training wheels and ignoring all its bullshit warnings that I can see you making the same assumptions on your first(ish) time using Linux. Plus you don’t expect something as benign as installing Steam to destroy your desktop manager.

His biggest criticism if I remember correctly was also that widespread adoption won’t be feasible until <whatever distro> is idiot proof and I agree. Ease of use is there these days but the things that make Linux so powerful can also be the things your average Windows user (deletes desktop shortcuts by accident and panics thinking they uninstalled their apps level of technical) can use to break their install, especially if they blindly follow one of the many (sometimes out of date) tutorials out there that tell you to run some random commands in the terminal.

With that said, it’s still his mistake. He should’ve read the damn instructions, and owned up to it more. He’s technical enough to know you can’t go in assuming you know how to use something you’re new to.

Obligatory I fucking love Linux and hope it becomes the default someday not just because fuck Windows and fuck Microsoft, but because it’s genuinely amazing in its own right.

The initial comment was saying a netflix app on a computer monitor is completely useless since the whole point of a computer monitor is to plug in a computer, which if the user wants can easily play stuff off netflix through a browser or app. Not comparing a PC with Netflix, just saying it’s stupid to put apps on a computer monitor (I agree).

True. Even I’ve been guilty of that at times. It’s just hard right now to see the positives through the countless downsides and the fact that the biggest application we’re moving towards seems to be taking value from talented people and putting it back into the pockets of companies that were already hoarding wealth and treating their workers like shit.

So usually when people say “AI is the next big thing”, I say “Eh, idk how useful an automated idiot would be” because it’s easier than getting into the weeds of the topic with someone who’s probably not interested haha.

The issue is that “AI” has become a marketing buzz word instead of anything meaningful. When someone says “AI” these days, what they’re actually referring to is “machine learning”. Like in LLMs for example: what’s actually happening (at a very basic level, and please correct me if I’m wrong, people) is that given one or more words/tokens, it tries to calculate the most probable next word/token based on its model (trained on ridiculously large numbers of bodies of text written by humans). It does this well enough and at a large enough scale that the output is cohesive, comprehensive, and useful.

While the results are undeniably impressive, this is not intelligence in the traditional sense; there is no reasoning or comprehension, and definitely no consciousness, or awareness here. To grossly oversimplify, LLMs are really really good word calculators and can be very useful. But leave it to tech bros to make them sound like the second coming and shove them where they don’t belong just to get more VC money.

That’s actually amazing! Maybe I should start ranting about stuff that annoys me in software I love. Wouldn’t mind being lead dev on something I’m an active user of.
