The UK Supreme Court has ruled the legal definition of a woman excludes trans women.
So much about this judement is so distressingly wrong.
Trans women are women. Trans men are men.
Not only that, they are basing the ruling on the concept that the protected category of sex is based on reproductive organs and/or chromosomes. Where does this ruling leave intersex people at then?
As always, it’s about cis people seeing binary in everything and erasing the existence of people through these stupid and malicious rulings.
They knew where the complaint was coming from, they knew the implications it would have, and they decided to rule in their favor anyways.
Oh yeah I fully agree, it throws multiple peoples under the bus. The thing is, trying to argue about biology with them is almost pointless because the proponents of this anti-trans rhetoric don’t actually care about what they call “biological facts”. The fact that they have based a legal ruling on a premise that is widely understood to be mistaken shows this.
They just want to punch down and punish the people whose mere existence challenges their preconceptions.
Gender non-conforming lesbian here … this is totally going to be used against people like me, too.
I feel so sorry for young queers in the UK having to grow up with these sorts of attitudes, when I was at school it was Section 28 and I genuinely thought we’d got past that, but the fascist bigots never sleep!
I fucking hate it here
Did you know some european countries pay you for education? And you can get a student visa? And with that also get free healthcare? And that the education takes long enough for you to apply for citizenship? And that that education can get you a nice job? And that the taxes from that job then make up for the cost of educating and housing you?
Just don’t fail, cuz then you have to pay them back :/
Any idea which European countries are good ones for doing this? 👀
The Netherlands, for one. It’s got a housing shortage though, it might be tricky
We have heard good things about Norway recently
I cannot not recommend that place atm
How come?
I don’t know why, but norway and sweden have been worsening their culture. Moving back to not accepting people who are different and normalizing jokea about hating women and such.
I’ve not been following in detail, but every time I look at there culture I find that stuff throughout.
The nature there is great tho
I mean, sure, but are any of them eager to take someone in their late 30’s? And that was all assuming I could just drop my life here and move away. It’s a nice idea, and I appreciate you saying it, but I can’t envision a way I can do it
Even better, if you’re over 21 you can take an acceptance test and skip (most) uni entrance requirements if you pass it.
Hmm, I’m not entirely sure I believe it would be that easy at my age, but I appreciate you saying it anyway, and I’ll keep it in mind
JK Rowling is definitely totally harmless, though, and we’re all obligated to separate the art from the artist, and the populatity of Harry Potter has literally nothing to do with her social clout or ability to push her ideology.
Joanne Rowling. Remember, she doesn’t want people to use their preferred names. Don’t give her a single fucking inch. She doesn’t get to be called JK either.
terf isles back at it again
why specifically women?..
Because of Transmisogyny. Trans women or trans feminine people in general are seen as a threat to patriarchy and the gender binary. There’s a lot of material on transmisogyny theory but to put it in very simple terms: There’s a hierarchy where men, through being cis and portraying traditional masculinity are afforded personhood, and everyone else is dehumanized and considered either a human incubator or a freak. Cis women and to some extent, afab trans people are subjugated because of a potential to give offspring but are placed on a higher level then those who deviate from this binary. Trans women especially but others like queer/effeminate men can also be othered into this category. To reinforce the binary and thus men’s role in the hierarchy, transmisogyny is the means to do this. It’s also why terfs are a thing, some women, especially privileged cis women, despite being oppressed by men still want to maintain power over trans women.
Because transphobes
because transphobes specifically dun lik transwomen?..
i dun lik these peeps ;(
bt sadli i cn undrstnd thm…
i wsh i didn… bt i do ;(
Transphobes think all trans people are scary rapist men looking for a way past the impenetrable magic barrier that only lets women into women’s toilets, and that there’s no reason anyone would want to go into the men’s toilets, so trans men are fictional and don’t need or want any rights, just like the law doesn’t give rights to elves and hobgoblins.
well… no, thats specifically transwomen… so theyr mostli jus angri agnst transwomen? thad… thad meks me vrri sad ;(
so theyr not transphobic. theyr transfemphobic… ;(
i wsh i were a grl ;;;;;;;;;;((((((
First thing that comes to mind is prisons, most men wouldn’t mind to go to a women’s prison even at the price of being misgendered as they are famously much much nicer than men’s. Also the law offers lots of advantages and help to women that they don’t to men like lighter penal sentences, scholarships, shelter homes for victims of domestic violence…
These cunts are basically the convergence of transphobia and misandry, for some of them trans men are alienated women that just want to escape sexism against women and trans women are men that want to usurp their womanhood (whatever the fuck that even means). Source: I’ve met and know a bunch of these hateful people.
oh… i didn evn kno there are diffrences lik dis… i didn kno “mens prisons” and “womens prisons” exist… mayb thads a US or UK thing… im jus a dum lil European here…
thad sounds very sad ;(
alsu… escaping sexism… like - thad kinda almost sounds reasonabl… i dun lik it, bt if peeps r still sexist in places… god thads sad ;(
It’s not a UK/US thing, it’s a whole world thing. Including most (all?) of Europe. There exist co-ed prisons but they aren’t the norm by any means in any country that I know of.
Because there are a ton of laws protecting women’s spaces and rights specifically. Not so for men.
i dun undrstnd… so is it an anti-men thing?..
peeps jus dun wan men to feel safe, n in their eyes, transwomen belong to that group?.. is thad it?
As an out of touch, middle aged, white guy, why do we need a legal definition of a woman?
Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
To facilitate punching down, as bullies do
It’s to restrict the rights of citizens. It’s classic culture war bs.
Not surprising. I wonder how far reaching this ruling will be. This just emboldens the bigots, but maybe that was the point.
Examples given in the media have been access to domestic violence help, changing rooms, support for rape victims, and clubs for gold-star lesbian arseholes who nobody in their right mind would want to be near anyway.
I see the UK not wanting to buy our products, but are fine with adopting our worse ideologies.
Fascism has planted its seed, it seems.
Unfortunately, the UK does not need to import transphobia from anywhere. The UK’s TERFs pioneered modern transphobia in many cases and they have been at it for a loooooong time. In many cases, it was the UK’s TERFs who came up with a ton of the now common transphobic arguments which the US and other places adopted from them, rather than the other way around.
Mind, they are 110% fascists and they love to sit down with the US’ Heritage Foundation and other fascist US orgs in order to coordinate with them.
Looking forward to V for Vendetta
“our” products? Who are “we” in this case?
Yay, so even after years on hrt when I’ll clearly be at a physical disadvantage I still won’t get legal protections (which were designed for exactly this) until I maybe eventually get a doctor to confirm what I already know? Great, lovely, thanks. Looks like I’m gonna have to start hoarding estrogen I guess cause I’m certain this is just the start. Really makes the swastika sticker I passed by on a walk yesterday that much more scary knowing there are people near me who would absolutely hurt me if they could, and now they’ve basically been given the go-ahead.
