Call Me Leni/Lenny/Shinigamiookamiryuu replied with “Who is Xitter Link”? and it was explained that the owner of Twitter is a Nazi, to which Call Me Leni/Lenny/Shinigamiookamiryuu responded with “The whole salute thing has been debunked though.” Call Me Leni/Lenny/Shinigamiookamiryuu locked the thread after members replied to the statement of the salute being debunked.

    Debunked in the sense that, one, what the perception was did not match his intention

    Intentions do not exist outside someone’s head. You cannot reliably know someone else’s intentions. You cannot use intentions to conclude or debunk anything.

    I remember when I was little and Pokémon came out with the character Registeel and the sprite had to be changed because the pose they chose for the creature just happened to resemble a Nazi salute.

    The difference is context. Registeel’s raised arm:

    • Who: a game company that typically tries to stay clear of controversial topics.
    • Whom: the game is geared towards a Japanese audience. Even a rising Sun flag would convey better right-wing ideologies to that audience.
    • What else is around it: Registeel is found inside a fucking cave dammit. And there’s nothing else in either the pokemon’s description or the environment that would even remotely reinforce that you should read its raised arm as a Nazi salute. Plus GF silently lowered Registeel’s arm in the following games.

    In the meantime, Musk’s gesture:

    • Who: a public figure known for babbling inane conspiracy theories, anti-Semitic views, transphobic views, etc.
    • Whom: to people cheering a freshly elected Trump. Among them, plenty Nazi.
    • What else is around it: Musk does a bunch of Nazi jokes that only reinforce that his salute should be understood as a Nazi salute from a Nazi saluting Nazi.

    While I think that it’s important to keep witch hunting at bay, sometimes you need to call a duck a “duck”, or a nazi salute “Nazi salute”.

    I think that Lenny is simply clueless though. I don’t think that she’s actively defending that muppet.

    Is it suddenly a sin to look at an issue like this from a different angle compared to everyone else? There is a difference between saying “all Nazis are bad” (a position I have always held) and asking “can we really conclude this person is one of them”.

    This all came after another controversy where I was trying to dissuade support for a murderer and dissuade support for the targeting of people based on social class, and so I have been mentally juggling around what actually counts as suggestively acceptable versus unacceptable. Choose one, people. Am I supposed to see deadly gestures plainly or not? Anyone would be free to answer.

      Elon Musk performed a Nazi salute…twice, standing in front of a presidential seal, at a nationally televised presidential inauguration. Then, instead of apologizing and/or clearing things up, he doubled down.

        That’s the problem. People think of this too simply. He doubled down on people speaking for his intentions behind the gesture, and even encyclopedias echoes the same caution I do. Are those encyclopedias pro-Nazi?

        In a world where it is considered “radical centrism” to be deconstructive of Elon Musk but also considered being a public menace to call Luigi Mangione and his supporters out for similar extremist alignments (the latter which I have not cracked down on since the other controversy), I guess I’ll say it this way: Unless he actually shows himself in the future to have had ideas that follow the lethality or level of discrimination displayed by Nazis (de facto) or identifies with them by name (de jure), I am anchoring onto the position which is well-held enough to be the position of said encyclopedias and which cements the fact there are two sides to every story, despite what many people in this far more extreme crowd would like me to think.

                  I would venture to guess you wouldn’t want things you said or did years ago to follow you forever either just because someone who has a grudge on you has the power to bring it up. Rough analogy, but it would be like saying it’s alright for a guy who served a few years in prison for a bank robbery to be run out of his new home by the bankers just because what he did before he served time was “not okay”.

                  The shipping thread was a thread made out of jest, and everyone else was used up, and I made the pairing.

                  Now, before you mention the third thing showcased, keep in mind I was banned before March 28th 2023 (for reasons I could get into but which should get their own block), which is the date it mentions. Several people can attest to this. I think this should be taken as a sign most people here are far too unquestioning.

                  As for the “semantic argument”, I am explaining what I meant. Because I’m relaying the semantics I meant by explaining those semantics. Everyone except the person I was responding to responded to me with confusion at the time, including Danish and including the rule enforcers. They knew what I meant, or I would have been out of there a lot sooner.

      The second thing you’re thinking of happened years ago. Despite your claim about me apologizing, I did apologize for that. The very same individual I remarked that to was recently encouraged to off themselves by the same people trying to call me out for telling him to do that, all for agreeing with me that he has the final call on whether I am to be forgiven (and because they have sympathies for his transphobic ex, who they have sympathies toward for no other reason than a common interest in preaching hate toward me).
