of course female characters can be shitty, but a lot of the time flaws a male character has will be forgiven while the same flaws in a female character will be used to say how horrible she is
CW child beating, mysoginist and ableist insults
he’s lashing out because he was beaten as a child? wow he is so nuanced!
she’s lashing out because she was beaten as a child? she’s just a psycho bitch with daddy issues
and this is not limited to fictional characters btw. women are held to higher standards than men all the time
But thats not typical, they usually take it further, sometimes it feels like they want to perpetuate the mysogyny and have men hate that woman on purpose, like they can never fail or are always the victim. Traits that’ll be seen and portrayed as negative for male characters are shown as positive for female characters with no consequences. I think it’s balanced out tho, I don’t really see it that much anymore and it was never that common.
It was probably to drive engagement with the shows, you get men hating character and woman jumping to defend them. Tons of social media engagement and free advertisement. Controversy always works.
i know, i am one. and I gotta say I find almost every single female character on “mainstream television” unbearable because the writers portray them in such sexist way & they have no personality. (well i guess its TV, its not supposed to be real) But I also find most men unbearable because they are… well I guess they’re supposed to act “charming” and “attractive” but I find them creepy. maybe I just hate people lol.

oh yea you’re absolutely right, the only people who hate female characters more than male audiences are male writers
